DONG GUAN CITY is situated in the mid-south of Guangdong, northeast of the Pearl River Delta, with Guangzhou to the north, Shenzhen to the south, neighboring to Hong Kong and Macao. It is in the center of the Guangzhou-Hong Kong Economic Corridor. It was named Dongguan because it is situated to the east of Guangzhou, and Guan grass is abundant there. The land area is 2,465 square kilometers, with a coastal line of 115.94 kilometers. The registered population is 1.5389 million; temporary one is over 5 million. Dongguan is a well-known homeland of overseas Chinese, with 0.20 million living abroad and 0.74 million of compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao that originated from Dongguan
Dongguan City is an important communication pivot in South China. State Highway 107 and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway run through the city from north to south. The four trunk highways and 13 network highways in the area are all of Grade I. Guangzhou-Kowloon Railway and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway cross the townships in the east and converge with Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway and Beijing-Kowloon Railway. Traffic mileage of inland waterways is 798 kilometers. There are many shifts of direct passenger ships to Hong Kong. Humen Port has been approved to be open to ships under foreign flags. Within a radius of 50 km there are two airports: Huangtian Airport of Shenzhen and Baiyun Airport of Guangzhou.
