Telemedicine
is the science of providing medical services via modern communications
networks. When used effectively, Telemedicine ensures patients receive
superior health care, irrespective of geographical location.
Telemedicine
first emerged in the 1950s with a demonstration that took place
in 1951 at the New York World Fair. Until recently the practice
of telemedicine was limited only to the organizations that pioneered
the idea, specifically NASA and the United States Military.
In
today's interconnected world, remote medical consultation and diagnosis
is a reality. Now Global Doctor brings world class medical expertise
to remote sites around the globe.
Australia
has taken a leading role in the development of telemedicine. Due
to the vastness of the Australian continent telemedicine solutions
have been rapidly deployed to service remote communities. Currently
four state governments in Australia are funding public health centers
in rural and remote areas that will make use of telemedicine. In
Western Australia alone there are 30 telehealth clinics in deployment.
